While streaming the presentations at the recent Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas, one detail particularly caught my attention: the effusive applause for US Vice President JD Vance. As soon as he entered the venue, the official broke the ice with an absurd comment about Bitcoiners' supposed affinity for guns.

Of course, I didn't expect anyone to be so bold as to throw a banana peel at him or anything like that, but the constant applause and cheers during his speech made me wonder if, as a community, we Bitcoiners have reached a point where we expect politicians to take Bitcoin (BTC) by the hand. Those who think this way are making a grave mistake.

Some will argue two things: that we shouldn't be hostile, that even from statism positive things can emerge; and that it's just a matter of waiting for the right person or team.

Regarding the first point, it's not about hostility, but rather about maintaining a critical stance : accepting what benefits Bitcoin without losing sight of the fact that circumstances may change tomorrow. Politicians may be supporting the ecosystem not out of conviction, but because it brings them economic, business, or electoral benefits. It's one thing to recognize what's done well and remain vigilant, but quite another to worship officials; their level of charisma doesn't matter.

As for the second point, it seems to me to be a fallacy that is perpetuated all too often, especially within a system of universal representative democracy, which is fraught with shadows. There are countries where, although it's possible to change parties, economic policies remain unchanged due to the power of lobbies. Not to mention single-party regimes, where it's common for ideas to remain stagnant for decades.

Rather than spending years waiting for change to come from above, it's far more productive to drive it from below. A quote from Juan Bautista Alberdi, one of the founding fathers of the Argentine Constitution of 1853, comes to mind: “If countries had no other producer of their wealth than their governments, all nations would be in misery.” In other words, if, in order to shape the future, we must cross our fingers hoping some politician will do it for us, then we will die waiting.

At what point, to cite just two examples, did Trump or Milei become the guarantors of freedom, the chosen ones to guide the destiny of millions who, otherwise, would supposedly have no salvation? Of course, if they have made promises that can organically and sustainably benefit ordinary citizens, it's logical to demand that they keep them and to value their actions.

What's alarming is the cult of these individuals and their team members. In the case of Bitcoin, it sometimes seems as if many are convinced its future depends on Trump remaining in power, or someone very similar taking over… Nothing could be further from the truth.

The danger of blindly trusting politics

From the time of Julius Caesar to the present, we know that disruptive political figures often emerge when others have failed, but that doesn't mean, no matter what they promise, that we should give them blind faith especially since they often proclaim themselves as anti-establishment emissaries, and end up recruiting officials who have been within the state apparatus for decades.

Watching an endless parade of politicians at the Bitcoin Conference and supposed bitcoiners cheering them on with enthusiastic applause and whistles, was a scene as disconcerting as it was revealing.

It's important to remember that Trump isn't acting out of sudden concern for those fed up with the state apparatus and its persecutory policies. He's doing so because, for now, many of his interests and those of his entourage, advisors, and allies are partially aligned with those of the community. This may generate progress, yes, but it should never be a reason to let our guard down. On the contrary, we must always maintain a critical eye and rigorously evaluate every measure implemented.

In times of confusion and promises of all kinds, thinking independently becomes more urgent than ever. Politics never deserves devotion, only vigilance. We must celebrate what works, demand results, and always keep in mind that any support for power must have clear limits and be evaluated with caution.

Fanaticism even when disguised as hope is the fertile ground for the worst betrayals. If we truly aspire to a healthy future for BTC, we need fewer heroes and more critical Bitcoiners; fewer grandiloquent speeches and more concrete actions that reinforce individual sovereignty, without asking permission or surrendering one's own judgment along the way.
