He Just Got Married — and Became the First Member of Our BCH Meetup

It is Sunday morning and I already woke up to be on the streets. Not to get funny or play around on the pitch with my bros, but to take a couple to the church who got married yesterday. They are humble people who just decided to marry not because they have a lot, but because they felt love for each other and it was time to legalize their union.

For me that was an inspiring moment after all, I also plan one day to get married. I took them from their home to church and I didn't charge anything as, like I said before, they don't have the means to pay even for their marriage. Yesterday they got their union registered in a government office and today they will be blessed in the church.

People in my region don't get married a lot because it's too expensive. First you need to get engaged and here that is more important than the marriage itself. The engagement ceremony is called "Lobolo" and it is not easy to do that. The main reason is that the wife's family will always ask the husband's family to buy a cow just for the start. This cow is very expensive and can cost more than 25,000 MZN which is more or less 360 USD.

This makes couples live for years without getting married or even getting their union known by the state. Also, they have kids, their kids grow up to get their own unions and the train runs like this. It is a known issue, not just in my country but in many others in Africa.

Like I was saying, the wife's family starts by asking for a cow, then it goes to:

  • The father's and mother's clothes

  • The food they need

  • The drinks they need

  • And the money they need.

Besides the cow, which is the most expensive part of a matrimony, they will also ask for money. Yes, money — and if you have kids within the relationship each one has its price. For example, it's normal for the wife's family to charge a lot more than a cow in cash because the couple has many kids in their relationship.

For all of this, people kinda avoid getting married and prefer to keep their relationship as a union. It is expensive to get married and families use this to get money.

This is why I respect this couple as they got married even in difficulties. In the middle of controversial ideas but they got it done. The husband told me that his wife's family understood their situation and didn't charge them anything more than a couple of Meticals, a bottle of wine and twenty chickens. All that they charged was used to make a small reunion and gathering to celebrate their matrimonial union.

It is a young couple and I know the guy from the streets so, while I was driving them, I started to speak about my project and my plans to host a Meetup on Dec 4. He started to show interest in the world of digital money and the curiosity hit him. I watched him paying attention to understand something "complicated" in his mind but that would not stop him from getting more from it.

Suddenly in the middle of our chat he said: "Count with me. Right now I don't understand anything about it but I am willing to learn."

What amazes me the most about him is that he's willing to learn even though he is busy with his ceremony. I already have his contact so I got the first guy that will attend the CHAPA BCH Meetup next month.

In my CHAPA BCH Moçambique journeys, I found and made friendships with a lot of people. Within them, some have experience with crypto and pay using cryptocurrency but many don't have that knowledge and ask a lot of questions when they see the BCH branding. Every day I explain to more than 10 to 20 people about CHAPA business and about BCH. Some understand immediately while for others it enters from one ear and exits from another.

Every day is a challenge but, as long as I can get them to see and learn more about BCH, I am happy. I don't just charge them to get a ride but sometimes I take people like this couple for free. While some can't understand why I do that, I can explain. I am a local resident, with a local innovative business and each day I go to the streets is like a living billboard about Bitcoin Cash. So, when I go to the streets the car itself is an ad and each time people see it, it's a win for BCH and for the ride business.

Conversations around CHAPA BCH must be mandatory in the streets of Maputo and Matola. Why? Because we need to onboard the next generation of young people and entrepreneurs to BCH. People need to "drink, eat and dream" about BCH and for that to happen we need to continue exploring this green field and make connections in our community. The CHAPA BCH Meetup is the first step to get a local community of enthusiastic people on BCH.

Like this young husband that now is my first confirmed guy in the Meetup, I will be inviting more of my riders, neighbors, friends and curious people to come to it. It won't be easy but I have the superpower of not giving up and being persistent, so I will get this mission done. If you want to help in the mission, you can send us some merch, brochures in PDF, some BCH to send to the participants for free and get them started in the ecosystem and much more.

Our journey is just starting and any help is necessary so that the movement grows bigger in Mozambique. I am counting on all the BCH community spread around the world. C'mon let's make this happen successfully.
