Tesla today posted about recalling over two million vehicles in the United States because they need to address concerns related to its Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system. The NHTSA has been investigating Tesla's vehicles for over two years now, to ensure that drivers are paying attention while they use the driver assistance system. Tesla has said that the software controls of Autopilot may not be enough to prevent misuse by drivers, and it now plans to deploy a software update to add additional controls and alerts to encourage drivers to maintain alertness when Autopilot is turned on.
Tesla's update will be rolled out to around 2.03 million Model S, X, 3, and Y vehicles. The company which is the world's most valuable car manufacturer, has faced criticism from the NTSB for a lack of system safeguards for Autopilot, and at the same time from the NHTSA for not ensuring the safety of the system for some time now. Tesla's shares could be seen moving down 1% in market trading after the announcement of the recall was going out. The good news is that they will be able to do the update over-the-air.
