Moonfacts, crazy things during Moonwalking: Apollo 11, the Buzz Aldrin's pen

By Luke86 | Astrofacts | 15 Feb 2020

Hi everyone,

in the last post i spoke about "facts" that happened during Apollo mission on the Moon, in particular what Gene Cernan, the last man walking on the Moon, did. We can find these "facts" (curious actions, funny videos, experiments, funny audios...) in all of the Apollo Mission, even during Apollo 13, the only mission which failed the landing on our satellite. Today we will start with the first mission, obviously the Apollo 11.

Imagine you're the first crew landing on the Moon and you know that everything, in every moment, could abort the mission and, in the worst conditions, kill you. Well, you made you duty and now you have to take off to come back to Command Module, but once you get back on the LEM you realize that the plastic lever which allows you to start the rocket engine and bring you back home.... is broken!!

What the f**K!!!! I think this could be what Edwin Aldrin thought when he saw that!! So he was remembered about a pen, part of the astronauts equipment. Here starts an incredible story with two different versions:

1) Aldrin realized the damage, took the pen and was able to join the electric wires of the switch and go

2) Aldrin communicated the damage to the Mission Control and an engineer simulated the same damage, solving the problem using a pen that he had with him. This engineer, named Alex, described the procedure to Aldrin, that followed instructions and took them back to Collins

Who is right? Formerly, Nasa has never denied the second version, neither Aldrin admitted that he had this stroke of genius. Probably we can say that it was not an Aldrin's idea.
