A Peek into History: March 25, 1818 - "Light-Horse" Henry Lee

A Peek into History: March 25, 1818

Lieutenant Colonel “Light-Horse” Henry Lee passed away in Georgia at the age of 62 on March 25, 1818. American Patriot, Soldier, Statesman and Founding Father.

Lee was about 20 years old when Patrick Henry appointed him to command a Company of Virginia Cavalry. They specialized in scouting, harassing and attacking the supply chains of the British.

On August 19, 1779 during his first major campaign he captured a British fort located at Paulus Hook, today's Jersey City New Jersey. The British lost over 200 soldiers in the battle, compared to 12 Colonials.

Lee was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in November of 1780 and within months of his promotion he joined Major General Nathanael Greene and the notorious “Swamp Fox”, Francis Marion, patrolling the Santee River area in the Carolina's.

Some of Lee’s most famous engagements include Guilford Courthouse, the Siege of Augusta, the Siege of Ninety-Six and the Battle of Eutaw Springs.

After the Revolutionary War Lee was elected to a seat in the Continental Congress (1786-88) and became one of the framers of our Constitution.

From 1789-91 he served in the Virginia General Assembly and from 1791–94 he served as the Governor of Virginia.

Henry was married twice. First in 1782 to his Second Cousin Matilda Ludwell who died in 1790 after birthing 3 children. Second to Anne Hill Carter who birthed six children and out lived Henry by 10 years.

Three cheers for Henry Lee, American Patriot! HUZZAH! HUZZAH! HUZZAH!

OH! Before we part,
Henry and Anne’s fifth child is also a person of consequence in history, none other than Robert Edward Lee. Robert was asked by Abraham Lincoln in April of 1861 to lead Union Forces in the invasion of the Confederate States but Edward resigned his US Army commission and instead defended his Homeland of Virginia as Commanding Confederate General.

American History, no such thing as a single cause
American History, no such thing as a single cause

History is a muddy mess! If someone tells you ANY event in history happened due to one thing or issue, RUN! They are an idiot! Example 1:American Revolution. What caused it? Taxes, representation, military over reach, distance, King George? All good answers but there are hundreds more! Example 2: "Civil War" was all about slavery. Lincoln called for the invasion in 1861 yet he created West Virginia in 1863 as a NEW UNION SLAVE STATE. Many more examples are out there...
