That is not because these projects are small. Hyperliquid is worth about $15 billion. Sui is worth roughly $5 billion. Monad raised money at a $3 billion valuation. These are not obscure projects. They are major players in the crypto economy.

So why does the world's most popular AI tool struggle to talk about them?

The answer has nothing to do with their technology. It has nothing to do with their market performance. It has everything to do with a quiet information gap that is reshaping how millions of people learn about crypto.

That gap lives on Wikipedia.

The Coverage Gap Is Worse Than You Think

A crypto communications firm called Chainstory ran an audit. They looked at the top 10,000 tokens on CoinGecko. They checked each one against Wikipedia's API. What they found should worry anyone who cares about how this industry is understood by the outside world.

Only 67 of the top 1,000 crypto projects have a Wikipedia page. That is less than 7 percent.

The numbers get worse as you go down the list. Among the top 10 projects, 80 percent have pages. Among the top 100, it drops to 40 percent. Among the top 500, just 12 percent. Among the top 1,000, it falls to 6.7 percent. And for projects ranked 1,001 to 10,000, the coverage is a staggering 0.2 percent.

Across the entire top 10,000, only 84 tokens have Wikipedia pages.

Think about that for a second. Wikipedia lists around 640 fintech companies. It lists over 7,000 software companies. But for crypto, the entire category has roughly 80 entries.

The missing names are not tiny startups. Hyperliquid has no page. Sui has no page. Monad Labs has no page. Berachain has no page. EigenLayer, which received a $100 million investment from a16z, has no page.

The smallest asset with a Wikipedia entry is Firo. It ranks 959th by market cap at around $15 million.

This is not a random gap. It is a systemic blind spot.

Why Wikipedia's Editorial Rules Are the Root Cause

Wikipedia has strict rules. To get a page, a subject must be "notable." That means independent, reliable sources must have written about it in depth.

That sounds reasonable. But the way those rules are applied to crypto creates a trap.

Wikipedia labels many crypto-focused media outlets as "generally unreliable." That includes major publications like CoinDesk. Meanwhile, mainstream media rarely covers DeFi or smaller crypto projects in any meaningful detail.

So the sources that do cover crypto are excluded. And the sources that are allowed rarely write about it.

The result is a self-reinforcing cycle. No reliable sources means no Wikipedia page. No Wikipedia page means less visibility. Less visibility means fewer mainstream sources. And the cycle continues.

Chainstory's report put it bluntly: Wikipedia's rigorous editorial filter was designed to protect the encyclopedia from noise during crypto's early cycles. But today, that filter is not just removing noise. It is erasing established infrastructure worth billions of dollars from the most trusted public record on the internet.

The AI Blind Spot: How This Affects Your Research

Here is where the problem gets serious for everyday investors.

Wikipedia is the single most cited source by ChatGPT. It accounts for about 7.8 percent of all source links in the AI tool's responses. That is far higher than Reddit at 1.8 percent or Forbes at 1.1 percent.

According to data from Trakkr, Wikipedia made up 36 percent of the top 10 citation links in ChatGPT and 25 percent of the top 100.

That means when you ask ChatGPT about a crypto project, it is heavily relying on Wikipedia for its answer. If that project has no Wikipedia page, the AI has almost nothing to work with. It might pull from unreliable sources. It might give you outdated information from years ago. Or it might simply not know the project exists.

Now think about how many people use AI tools for research. Retail investors. Journalists. Analysts. Even employees at financial institutions. All of them are getting a distorted picture of the crypto industry because the underlying data is incomplete.

This is not a minor inconvenience. It is a structural problem that affects how the entire industry is perceived by the outside world.

The Second-Order Effects Nobody Is Talking About

The Wikipedia gap does not just affect what ChatGPT says. It affects how crypto is understood, adopted, and regulated.

New Users Get a Distorted View of Crypto

Imagine someone who heard about crypto from a friend. They open ChatGPT and ask: "What is the best DeFi project?"

The AI pulls from Wikipedia. It mentions the few projects that have pages. It skips the ones that do not. The user walks away thinking the industry is smaller, less mature, and less important than it actually is.

That is a problem for adoption. Crypto needs new users. But new users are being taught that the industry barely exists.

Institutions and Regulators Rely on AI Too

Wikipedia's notability rules require coverage in independent, reliable sources. Crypto media is often excluded. Mainstream media rarely covers smaller projects. So even large, legitimate projects cannot meet the threshold.

Some in the industry are pushing for Wikipedia to update its guidelines. They argue that the rules were written for a different era of crypto. They argue that the industry has matured. They argue that excluding established projects is no longer protecting readers. It is misleading them.

Others are building alternative sources of information. Community-driven wikis. AI tools trained on crypto-specific data. Independent research platforms.

But none of these have Wikipedia's reach or ChatGPT's reliance on it.

The most practical solution might be the hardest one. Crypto projects need to earn mainstream coverage. They need to be written about by sources that Wikipedia considers reliable. That means engaging with traditional media. That means building relationships with journalists. That means telling stories that matter to people outside the crypto bubble.

It is slow work. But it is the only path to closing the gap.
