Most of you have probaly heard of it. Maybe you, your partner, parents, grandparents or other people have it. Artrosis can have a big effect on your life, but what is artrosis? And what can I do about it? Here are the basics of artrosis.
What is artrosis?
Artrosis is a dysfunction between the building and breakdown of cartilage in a target. This often leads to degeneration. Artrosis is one of the most common disorders of the joints. The older you get the more likely that you will get artrosis. It also occurs more in woman than men. Problems like Obesitas, lack of movement and a bad posture have a correlation with artrosis.

What are the symptoms of artrosis?
- Stiffness
- Starting pain
- Instability in the joint
- Tiredness
- Muscle weakness
- Cracking sounds
- Movement restrictions
- Change of positions in the joints
- Hydrops in the joints
- Difficulties in activities
What can i do to prevent artrosis?
There are a few things you can do to lower the chance of getting artrosis or the intensity of symptoms that come with artrosis.
Obesitas: When you have a healthy weight then there will be less pressure in the joints. By having less pressure in the joint, then the chances of degeneration of the cartilage are also getting lower.
Movement: By exercising daily you will be keeping your joints healthy. Of course I am talking about normal movement like going for a walk or swimming. Not Athlete level training.
Overuse: Under-movement is bad for your joints, but also and overuse of your muscles. That way your joints will get the same pressure as with obesitas. So pay attention to this and rest enough.
Nutrition: alcohol and fat increase the change of getting artrosis.

What can i do to reduce the symptoms of artrosis?
To reduce the symptoms of artrosis you will need to make sure that the joint and surrounding tissues get as health as possible. For example.
- Normal movement like walking: to make sure that the joint will move smoothly
- Mild strength training: to train the muscles and ligaments around the joint
- Stability training: to train propriocepsis and muscle stability around the joint
- Nutrition: more and more research has been done about the necessity of nutrition with artrosis, for example: many vegetables, 2 pieces of fruit per day, fatty fish, cabbage, ginger, omega 3, glucosamine, Chondroitin and Hyaluronic Acid
