30 Years with 20 to go

tl;dr: The paradigm shift to a decentralized world will play out over decades, not months.

The mistake I made in the Web 1.0 era (the late 90s) and Web 2.0 era (2000s) was in thinking that the changes that would happen as a result of the arrival of each of those technologies would happen a lot faster than they did.

As Yancey Strickler pointed out in his book This Could Be Our Future, the massive shifts in society from novelty/ridicule->opposition->acceptance actually play out over 30-year cycles.

While the early days of crypto for me were marked by a massive belief in the power of decentralized networks and their inevitability, I would like to think that I realized early on that this was a decade+ bet.

I still maintain that.

It’s tempting to get excited about the short-term return possibilities. There’s still hysteria and it will be around for a while because the innovation in the space happens at such a torrid pace.

However, the bulk of the people in the world don’t own any crypto. Most likely won’t for a while, but, as they say….gradually, gradually, gradually…then suddenly.

We’re 10 years into this one.
