The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that in the past 5 weeks, the number of Ebola virus cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has nearly doubled to 100 cases, marking the nation's 11th Ebola outbreak. As of now, 96 of the 100 reported cases are confirmed while 4 are still under investigation. Meanwhile, 43 people have lost their lives in this outbreak.

This 11th outbreak was declared on June 1st, 2020, in the Equateur Province. According to local officials, a cluster of cases was initially detected in the province's capital city of Mbandaka, but has since spread to 11 of the province's 17 health zones. World Health Organization spokespeople say that this current outbreak "presents significant logistical challenges", as it takes place in remote and densely-forested regions on the north-western province and it can take days to send supplies and medical professionals to areas that lack roads or other travel infrastructure.
