Somalia Appeals for International Medical Help Following Fatal Twin Car Bomb Attack

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appealed for international medical assistance following a twin car bomb attack in the capital city of Mogadishu that left at least 100 dead and roughly 300 injured. The first vehicle bomb detonated at about 14:00 local time at the Somali Ministry of Education compound. A second blast took place within minutes after ambulances arrived at the scene of the initial blast. Local news outlets also reported that some of those interviewed reported hearing gunfire following the explosions.

This latest incident marks the deadliest attack in Somalia since a twin truck bombing took place in the same area on October 14th, 2017, which resulted in at least 587 fatalities and over 300 injuries. The latest attack has been condemned by officials of nations such as the United States of America, Qatar, Turkey, and Germany.

President Mohamud blamed the al-Shabab militant group for the latest attack, calling it a massacre. While the militant group has not yet claimed or denied responsibility over the bombings, the website Somali Memo, a known supporter of al-Shabab and similar organization, claims that the group said it was behind the incident.
