At least 20 soldiers and 40 civilians are confirmed dead while hundreds more were injured after two attacks by militants on the Borno state of Nigeria. According to local media, the attacks happened in the Monguno and Nganzai regions. The Islamic State West Africa Province, an offshoot of the Boko Haram militant group, has claimed responsibility over the attack.

Sources say that militants armed with light and heavy weapons including rocket launchers entered Monguno at about 11:00 local time, overpowered government forces, set fire to the local police station, and damaged a United Nations humanitarian hub. At least 20 soldiers were killed in Monguno, though the militants also suffered casualties. Locals say that the militant fighters distributed leaflets to locals, warning them to not work with the military or "non-believers".

At about the same time, militants entered Nganzai on motorcycles and pickup trucks, later killing over 40 civilians. As of now, the total death toll and injuries is still unclear. Local hospitals report that their facilities are overwhelmed by the number of casualties.
