Gunfire was exchanged between North and South Korea at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) which divides the two nations. According to South Korean military sources, shots from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea initially hit a guard post in the border town of Cheorwon, and South Korean personnel returned fire. No injuries or deaths were reported on either side, and South Korean officials say that there is no sign of unusual troop movement in the North.
This is the first time since 2017 that North Korea has opened fire on the South, though both United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo alongside South Korean government officials believe that the shots were "accidental" and not intentionally provoking conflict. The motives behind the shooting is still under investigation.

The latest incident happened about a day since North Korean Supreme Leader reappeared after not appearing in public or on media in about 3 weeks.
