At about 20:40 local time, a 36-year-old man with a knife attacked fellow passengers on a train on the Odakyu Line near the Seijogakuen Station of Tokyo, Japan, injuring 10 people. According to local media, one victim, a female University student, was seriously injured while the others suffered less severe injuries. In total, 9 out of the 10 injured were taken to local medical facilities while another was treated by medical first responders and later walked away from the scene.

The train driver brought the train to an emergency stop after hearing noises coming from the carriages. The suspect fled from the train after the knife handle broke while train crew members guided passengers along the tracks to the nearest station. He later walked into a convenience store and told staff members that he was "the suspected in the incident reported by the news" and that he was tired of fleeing. Upon seeing bloodstains on the man's shirt, the manager called the police. Tokyo Metropolitan Police confirmed that they have a man in custody, but have not yet released further details. Investigations are still ongoing.

Local media outlets report that the man allegedly told police that he became angry when he saw women who "looked happy and wanted to kill them. The man said he initially planned to attack a female store employee who reported him to the police for shoplifting earlier in the day but decided to attack people on a train instead as he noticed that the store was past closing time. He also reportedly said he chose to conduct the attack on an express train with fewer stops so that passengers would stay onboard for longer, offering him the chance to attack more people. The suspect boarded the train with a knife, scissors, cooking oil, and a lighter. In one train carriage, he poured the cooking oil on the floor and attempted to set it on fire.
