Mexican officials report that 8 police officers and 3 state prosecutor office agents are dead after gunmen ambushed a convoy in the town of Coatepec Harinas in the State of Mexico during broad daylight. The convoy had been patrolling the area to combat armed gangs and cartels operating in the area. Local witnesses say that the attackers later rounded up the bodies of the fallen officers and continued to fire at them. Currently, no person or group has claimed responsibility over the attack, and it is still unclear whether any of the nation's most powerful cartels were involved. This attack is Mexico's largest killing of law enforcement since October of 2019.
State Security Minister Rodrigo Martínez-Celis called the attack "an affront to the Mexican State", and promised to respond with "all force". The Mexican National Guard alongside units of the Mexican Armed Forces have been deployed to the region to search both on land and by air for those responsible the attack. It is believed that the La Familia Michoacana gang controls the territory where the latest incident happened. According to NGO Causa en Común, at least 524 police officers were killed in Mexico in 2020 alone.
