Ethereum’s Next Upgrade: Why the Delay Matters More Than the Hype

Ethereum’s major structural upgrade, called Glamsterdam has hit a pause during its early testing phase. Developers recently decided to delay the planned October 26 activation on the Hoodi test network. They are taking time to examine how the proposed changes might affect existing smart contracts. Now there is no new date set for the activation. For analysts, developers and investors who are closely watching the Ethereum ecosystem understanding what this delay means is more useful than chasing wild price predictions based on hype.

What Is Glamsterdam Trying to Improve?

The Glamsterdam upgrade aims to change how Ethereum handles its operations. It introduces a framework to increase the network’s capacity and restructure how transaction blocks are built and proposed. Two key parts of this upgrade are block-level access lists and enshrined proposer-builder separation or ePBS.

Block-level access lists help organize the data needed to process transactions before they are executed. This reduces the workload on the network. Enshrined proposer-builder separation splits the job of building blocks from the job of proposing them. It does this directly in the protocol. This helps prevent centralization and stops types of censorship. The goal is to open up space for more activity on the network.. Upgrading a live decentralized blockchain like Ethereum needs extreme caution. The current system supports thousands of applications. Any change must protect those apps. Keep the network fair and stable.

Why Developers Paused the Test

The main reason for the pause lies in changes to gas accounting. Gas is how Ethereum measures and charges for transaction processing. The team found that the new way of calculating gas could cause smart contracts to fail in ways. Some contracts might revert—meaning they fail—differently than their creators intended. This could create issues in existing decentralized finance systems. It’s important to stress that this is a testnet pause. The main Ethereum network is still running normally. The developers are being responsible by stopping to look at these risks. Their goal is to make sure the network stays secure and stable before moving

What Should Readers Watch Next?

The important things to follow now are the updated activation schedule for Hoodi clear explanations about how the smart contract risks will be fixed and the successful completion of the testnet deployment, before anything goes live on the main network. This delay does not mean the Glamsterdam upgrade is canceled. It means the team is being careful. They are adjusting the timeline to protect the network.

Ethereum should still be seen as a project studying. Ask: "What new capacity will this unlock? What risks are still possible?. How much of the expected value is already reflected in today’s price?”
