Once again and another hack attack has been done.
Just 48 hours later after launching it's native token to a massive $1.4 billion valuation the BNB chain based prediction platform named Predict.fun has suffered a major breach. Hackers has successfully drained roughly 400,000 USDT from 29 user wallet's natively integrated into the Binance Wallet app.
Here's is how this breach happened, the project response and the critical security lessons every Web3 user needs to learn from this incident.
The Exploit Vector: It Wasn't the Smart Contracts
The starting phases indicate that the core smart contacts of Predict.fun remain fully intact and unbreak during the attack. But instead the hackers targeted a highly vulnerable, external attack surface: a third-party-hosted API documentation site.
When documentation Hub was compromised hackers managed to access owners keys and seized it. They used those stolen credentials to sign and execute unauthorized transfer transactions directly from connected user wallets. This attack was at once but carried out in two waves before the team could intervene.
Full Refunds Pledged
In wave of exploit team Predict.fun moved fast and mitigate further damage. The compromised documentation hub was immediately taken down and made it offline to end the vulnerability.
Crucially for all the effected users the pledged official reimbursement for loss . And platform promised to cover all the loses of 400,000 USDT stolen from the 29 impacted wallets, offering rare sigh of relief in the volatile world of DeFi exploits.
Essential Security Takeaways for Web3 Users
This and last few incident happened back to back in last few days and growing breach making fear high in market.
Smart Contract Audits Aren't Enough
A project can have perfectly audited smart contract, but it still relies on web of external services for front ends analytics, APIs, and documentation. If any piece of this secondary infrastructure is compromised, your funds can be still at risk.
The Danger of Native Wallet Ecosystems
Convenient mini-apps embedded directly within exchange wallet app like (Binance wallet app) offer seamless user experiences but they can make users fall into a false sense of absolute security. Treat every decentralized application (dApp) with the same level of caution, regardless of where you access it.
Practice Wallet Hygiene
Never keep your main savings in wallets like this. Use separate hot wallet for trading, and regularly use tools like Revoke.cash to cancel token allowances and smart contract permissions when you are done trading.
