People have been actively destroying some of the world’s most important historical documents and ancient relics for extremist reasons... to what end?
“Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.” ― Reé Magritte
It has always driven me mad knowing that we will never know the whole story, our full history, or how many important things have been lost to time. I would see news clips of ISIS groups destroying religious monuments while Israeli’s and Palestinians continue to slaughter each other and reclaim territories at the expense of destroying the territory.
While human suffering plays a dramatic role in these events, the less talked about victims are in the form of historical pieces of artwork, monuments, and craft arts through relics. Countless are already permanently destroyed, while many lay in ruins, and for the damaged remains, their true meaning may never be derived or adequately analyzed.
Here is a video of ISIS destroying ancient artifacts in Mosul to grant you some perspective:
After witnessing someone burn a Banksy original after they minted it as an NFT, I realized there is a solution to this problem of lost knowledge. We can immortalize these locations and items of historical importance; we’ve never had more incredible technology or better camera resolution for doing so than we do now.
At least, that is what current taught history permits us to believe, despite it being physically impossible for us to replicate many things we’ve discovered on Earth. However, if an advanced civilization like Atlantis did exist as the philosopher and writer Plato, along with many others throughout history have indicated, wouldn’t you want to find that hypothetically lost advanced civilization and understand it, appreciate it?
It is already a standard to heavily photograph and document and video-capture these places and things for their historical significance. Why not put those pictures, videos, and data on the blockchain and store them, like a database of that which mattered most, that can never be destroyed? Why not store this data somewhere safe as with a public chain instead of aging in various museums or the fabled Vatican archives?
Imagine all of the world’s most important places, fabled items, and works of art both in fine and craft arts being preserved digitally, forever. What if we could reach them all from any computer in the world… wouldn’t research speed up exponentially if these things were available in the form of a blockchain database or wiki in which private researchers and institutions can make use of them?
I am sure there are exceptions as for paid media or places that still charge fees but said fees could be incorporated into the NFTs in countless ways that would likely contribute more to the cause of the person seeking income, even if it is only driven for personal profit. I imagine that security for some things would also be required, and NFTs could also cater to “sensitive” things stored on the chain with encryption and well-set permissions.
Like William Shatner, one of the famed people who back the WAX (Worldwide Asset Exchange) NFT platform and has made a killing minting and releasing NFT’s of his own, I am obsessed with the mysteries this universe holds. I see irrefutable logic in the idea of bridging NFTs with freedom of information. I believe that everyone should have access to these works of art that tell us stories.
Much of modern religion, beliefs, holidays, etc., have all been derived from ancient mythology, which was routinely displayed in some form of artwork or composition. Even verbally taught and passed down traditions as with the Aboriginal peoples in Australia can be audio recorded and preserved digitally. What if we could string all the pieces together through a digital spider-web of analysts, enthusiasts, and specialists?
The main difference here would be availability. If you were to attempt to learn about these places, you could accomplish a good amount on Google. Still, as a person who has passed through an Art History course, you will frequently run into copyright issues, allowing only low-resolution images for public view and citation. For academic reasons alone, we should migrate to a system that allows us to store the best quality media and data for research possible.
Copyrights could be maintained via NFTs, as could authorship, ownership, sales history, and more. Imagine how many great fakes we could discover and how many magnificent pieces are legitimate works of artists that have never been confirmed? Forensically speaking, this is far from outside the range of possibility; we have the capability to analyze things to an extreme level of detail in 2021.
Why stop there? Why not start databasing and collecting scientific samples, slides, and data and make that available through the blockchain as well? What about a database of species? Why stop producing anything to blockchains where it can be appreciated forever, especially if all parties are rewarded for doing so? Bitcoin was only the beginning of blockchain, and we are far from the end.
What if we could keep it all, to give to all, forever?
As always, comments, suggestions, and friendly debates are highly encouraged.
