In October of 1982, an eerie incident occurred in Cannock Chase, a vast woodland in Staffordshire, England, known for its dark history which includes the infamous murders of children in the 1960s. However, this tale is not about those past tragedies but a more supernatural encounter that still sends shivers down the spine of those who dare to remember.

The Encounter:

On the night of October 29, 1982, a local man named David Evans, then in his mid-30s, decided to take an evening walk through the Chase to clear his mind after a long day at work. The moon was full, casting long shadows among the trees, and a chill was in the air, perfect for the approaching Halloween.

David had always enjoyed the solitude of the woods, but on this particular night, the atmosphere felt different—charged with a tension he couldn't quite place. As he walked near the old Roman Road, he heard the faint sound of children laughing. Thinking it odd for children to be out so late, especially on such a foreboding night, he followed the laughter, his curiosity piqued.

What he encountered would haunt him for years. Emerging from the shadows were two children, no older than ten, dressed in dated, somewhat tattered clothes from an earlier era. Their faces were pale, almost luminescent in the moonlight, but it was their eyes that made David's blood run cold. They were entirely black, devoid of any white or pupil, just deep, endless voids.

“Hello, can you help us?” one of the children asked with a voice that seemed to echo unnaturally.

David, feeling a wave of dread, managed to ask, “What are you doing out here? And what’s wrong with your eyes?”

The other child then spoke, their voice eerily calm, “We want to come home with you. Please let us in.”

Panic setting in, David refused, insisting they go back to their parents. The children's demeanor changed; their voices became harsh, almost demonic, repeating their plea more insistently. David backed away, but the children began to move towards him with an unnaturally swift, gliding motion.

David turned and ran, hearing their laughter turn into a menacing chant, “Let us in, let us in,” until he reached his car and drove away, the sound still lingering in his ears.

The Legacy:

This story of David's encounter spread through Cannock Chase, becoming part of its folklore. Over the years, similar sightings have been reported, especially around Halloween. The Black-Eyed Children are now a legend, with many locals believing they are the spirits of the children who met tragic ends in the Chase, seeking to enter the world of the living for one night each year.

To this day, when October 29th rolls around, people tread more carefully through Cannock Chase, their minds on the warnings of their elders about the night when the barrier between worlds thins, and the black-eyed children might just be waiting for an invitation home.
