Some notes on Israel

By Vladan Lausevic | Vlad's politics | 20 May 2023

While Israel has achieved social unity on the surface with a consensus on being a Jewish country, deep divisions exist based on ethnicity, religion, politics, and attitudes. These divisions have been managed through deliberative, democratic decision-making and the power of Israel's independent judiciary, which checks the government.

The current right-wing government proposes radical judicial reforms that undermine the judiciary's power and weaken institutional checks and balances. These reforms include allowing the Knesset to override court rulings and giving the government control over the appointment of judges. These changes could jeopardize fundamental rights and enable the government to pursue extreme policies if implemented.

However, the current coalition led by the populistic and collectivistic Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consists also of right-wing extremists eager to remove judicial obstacles to advance their ideological agendas. Netanyahu's motivation may stem from his desire to avoid corruption charges. Some coalition partners, particularly the Haredi parties, have shown hesitation due to public backlash, but Netanyahu remains steadfast in pursuing the reforms.

The article suggests that Israel's demographic shifts, such as the growing ultra-Orthodox population and migration patterns, have contributed to its rightward drift. The left has also been discredited by the failure to make peace with the Palestinians, leaving the right as the perceived viable choice for many voters.

The delicate balance of Israeli society has been maintained through deliberative democracy, compromise, and cooperation. The Supreme Court has played a crucial role in this process. However, if the judiciary's power is curtailed, Israeli society could become more polarized and conflict-ridden. The article emphasizes the need for a centrist-liberal coalition that values institutional balance and is committed to reviving Israel's democratic project to ensure its survival.
