In recent events at the 'National Conservatism conference in London, Dirk Campbell, a climate activist, was forcefully removed from the stage for warning about the rise of fascism within the new conservative grouping known as the 'Nat-Cs.' The conference featured prominent figures such as British Home Secretary Suella Braverman and Tory backbenchers Danny Kruger and Miriam Cates, who expressed views on race, birth rates, and tradition.
The conference showcased a strain of neoliberal nationalism within the right wing of the Conservative Party, drawing inspiration from figures like former US President Donald Trump. While not explicitly fascist, this conservative right has been influenced by ideologies associated with modern fascism, as seen in the works of individuals like Aleksandr Dugin, Guillaume Faye, and Richard Spencer.
The Nat-Cs have embraced rhetoric that "other" various groups, including EU citizens, non-European migrants, and professionals from other countries, contribute to a stigmatization of these groups. The movement seeks to disorganize and degrade British democracy, amplifying racism, misogyny, and homophobia, often propagated through right-wing media channels like GB News and TalkTV.
The demands of the Nat-Cs lack economic logic. Yet, their goal is to create a movement that promotes neoliberal nationalism while imposing market forces on society. This agenda includes eroding democracy, human rights, and media diversity while normalizing authoritarian nationalism and racism.
However, this movement is likely to fail as it needs to be in touch with the reality of the diverse and resilient culture of the UK. The younger generation, in particular, is aware of the impacts of neoliberal policies, the limitations of social mobility, and the need for collective action to address societal issues. They can recognize fascism when they see it, and the Nat-Cs' lack of working-class representation reflects their disconnection from the broader population.
Once the Conservative Party loses power, the Nat-Cs will likely align themselves with the Trump agenda and potentially seek leadership that aligns with the interests of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Brexit has weakened the liberal wing of conservatism. In contrast, the socially liberal wing associated with Boris Johnson has suffered reputational damage. The Tories now have little to counter the rise of Bravermanism, except for figures like Rishi Sunak, who embody technocracy without competence.
The language and ideas presented at the Nat-Cs conference were disconnected from the reality of the UK, a diverse and multicultural society shaped by decades of mass migration. The progressive social changes achieved over the years, such as LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality, are not likely to be reversed.
It is worth noting that this year marks the centenary of British fascism, which has been consistently defeated throughout history, and any faction of conservatism aligning with it has been judged treacherous. The new right wing of the Tory party seems to be repeating the mistakes of the past without learning from them.
