Fusionism, a political theory introduced by Frank Meyer in the 1960s, advocated for a libertarian-conservative coalition based on the belief that freedom and virtue are essential but cannot be coerced. This alliance was partly driven by shared anti-communist sentiments and opposition to the growing administrative state.
However, while libertarians may have achieved some policy victories, such as airline deregulation, the negatives outweigh the positives. Conservatives have supported destructive policies, including the drug war, mass incarceration, anti-immigration laws, the Iraq War, qualified immunity for police, and anti-LGBT measures like "don't ask, don't tell." Presently, conservatives are taking anti-libertarian stances in the culture wars, such as restricting medical procedures for trans youth and regulating bathroom and pronoun use in schools.
These actions infringe upon freedom of speech and expression. The passage of SB 1438 in Florida exemplifies how such legislation can be used to oppress sexual minorities. Conservatives often prioritize factors like anti-Leftism, traditional gender and family norms, or national security over freedom, making the libertarian-conservative coalition unsustainable in the long run.
