LGBTQIA+ has been widely used to encompass diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, but its expanding and under-defined nature makes it unsuitable for international human rights discourse. An alternative term, SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics), has gained traction among human rights advocates.
SOGIESC provides a more accurate and inclusive framework for understanding sexuality, gender, and human rights, and it offers greater clarity and universality compared to LGBTQIA+. The continuous addition of new letters to LGBTQIA+ can lead to exclusion and reinforce a sense of otherness. In contrast, SOGIESC focuses on shared traits and shifts away from specific populations.
The term has been incorporated into various training programs and policy initiatives by international organizations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the European Union. It is seen as a grassroots tool that allows activists from diverse backgrounds to protect themselves and their work without explaining their lived realities.
While LGBTQIA+ still promotes diversity and inclusion, SOGIESC provides a more accurate and inclusive framework for human rights advocacy, policy, and law.
