  • Around half a million Poles protested in Warsaw against the right-wing government of President Andrzej Duda, marking the most prominent pro-democracy demonstration in Poland since the Cold War. The protest coincided with the anniversary of Poland's first post-war democratic election. The protests come after Duda's Law and Justice Party offered to amend a controversial law rather than scrap it entirely, which many Poles had demanded. Critics argue that the law is being used to target opposition forces and undermine democratic norms.

  • The legislation, aimed at investigating Russian influence in Polish politics, has faced criticism for potentially targeting opposition leader Donald Tusk, a former Polish prime minister and president of the European Council.

  • Saudi Arabia announced a unilateral decision to cut its oil output by 1 billion barrels daily, leading to a 2.5% increase in global crude prices. Other OPEC+ states extended earlier cuts, but the Saudis went further. The move is seen as an attempt to boost oil prices, with Riyadh needing higher prices to meet its economic goals and diversify its economy away from fossil fuels. The US and EU have accused Saudi Arabia of manipulating oil prices.

  • Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a former rival and ally of Donald Trump, is set to enter the race for the 2024 Republican Party presidential nomination. Christie has openly criticized Trump and may attempt to dent his popularity.

  • Taiwan's presidential election in January 2024 is expected to be consequential, focusing on relations with China. VP William Lai of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and former top cop Hou Yu-ih of the opposition Kuomintang Party are the leading candidates. Still, Ko Wen-Je of the Taiwan People's Party is gaining traction. Ko appeals to young voters and offers a different approach, focusing on domestic issues rather than relations with China. However, critics see him as an inexperienced politician with an unclear platform. There are concerns about his stance on cross-strait relations and speculation that he might appease the KMT.
