Democracy rituals for building unity and resisting authoritarianism (featuring Brian Kallas)

In today's world, pro-democracy movements often lack a crucial political tool that authoritarian movements have effectively mastered: the power of ritual. Rituals have been deeply ingrained in human behavior for thousands of years, serving as a binding force that unites individuals into cohesive groups with shared purpose and identity. However, while the political right and authoritarian movements have skillfully harnessed rituals to mobilize their members, the political left and pro-democracy movements have often disregarded or rejected them.

Rituals hold immense power in shaping human behavior and emotions, providing a sense of togetherness and unity that is deeply satisfying. They have the potential to create collective enthusiasm, a feeling of shared harmony and belonging, which authoritarian movements have effectively capitalized on. By contrast, pro-democracy movements often neglect rituals and fail to provide a similar sense of community and purpose, which puts them at a disadvantage.

Pro-democracy movements must reclaim rituals, understanding that they are neither inherently good nor bad but tools that can be wielded for various purposes. Instead of celebrating individuals, rituals should emphasize ideas and values promoting justice, democracy, and true patriotism. Embracing rituals can help forge social bonds and unlock the power of human organization, making political engagement intrinsically fun and rewarding.

Examples from around the world illustrate the potential of rituals in political movements. For instance, the elaborate rituals and symbols employed in Trump rallies foster a sense of group cohesion and collective enthusiasm among participants. Thai pro-democracy activists countered authoritarian propaganda by adopting the three-finger salute from The Hunger Games as a symbol of resistance, effectively employing ritual as a form of protest.

To effectively combat authoritarianism and strengthen democratic movements, progressive forces must develop their rituals and symbols. Rather than outright opposing rituals, efforts should focus on channeling rituals' power towards positive values and causes. By embracing rituals that celebrate patriotism, pro-democracy movements can provide an alternative to the complex rituals promoted by authoritarian movements.

The importance of rituals in human history and the need for replacement rituals that reflect our contemporary values. Just as religion has historically served as a bastion of ritual, modern society must create new rituals to reinforce ideas and reflect our shared values. Initiatives like Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States and the potential for renaming and reimagining public holidays in the UK demonstrate the potential for rituals to strengthen democratic ideals and build communities.

In summary, pro-democracy movements can no longer afford to disregard the power of rituals. By understanding and harnessing the inherent human desire for collective experiences and shared purpose, these movements can effectively counter authoritarianism, foster unity, and build a more just and democratic world.
