Turning Disney movies into a Netflix wildlife documentary

By PierreL | My Work | 22 Mar 2021

If you know my Youtube channel, you're probably familiar with my Trailer Mashup concept, for which I take the audio of a blockbuster movie trailer and edit footage from an animated movie to it. I usually try to take movies that follow the same topic/world/idea to make them match even more (Avengers and The Incredibles for instance). Well, I decided to extend this concept to documentaries and to tackle the great Netflix doc Our Planet (which you should definitely check out if you haven't yet).

To make it more interesting, I decided to try to match it shot by shot, meaning I wanted to find a shot in an animated movie (from Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks/Whatever) that matched as closely as possible the actual shot from the documentary trailer. To do this, I had to rely on my memories of all the animated movies I've seen, and on luck as I skimmed through hours of many more movies to try to find exactly what I was looking for. I think about 95% of the trailer is matched pretty perfectly and I really didn't think I would be able to find so much usable footage when I went into this!

If there's one takeaway from this video, it's that the animators in these studios often nail pretty perfectly animal movements and behaviours so, props to them!

In total I used 14 movies, 13 from Disney and one from Warner Bros., and here's the final result:

I also uploaded the full version without the comparison, but it's definitely more interesting to see the side by side one in my opinion.

This makes it my fifth Trailer Mashup, after Avengers/The Incredibles, Top Gun/Planes, Robin Hood (Ridley Scott)/Robin Hood (Disney) and Pirates of the Caribbean/Sinbad. It had been a while since my last one (November 2019!) but I want to keep making more and more of these, as they are very fun to make and pretty entertaining to watch.

Let me know in the comments what you thought of this one, and don't hesitate if you have a mashup idea that you think would work well with this concept!
