Supermarket Shortages in the States

“Due to a poor harvest season, we are experiencing shortages on many of our canned vegetable items. We hope to be back in stock by the end of August.” - local Kroger supermarket

“Due to limited availability, we are experiencing product shortages across this category. We’re working closely with our suppliers to get these items back as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” - Tennessee Walmart

Living in a very small town, we grocery shop at neither Kroger nor Walmart. The closest Walmart we have is about 15 miles away. I don't even know if there is a Kroger within a hundred miles of us.

We do most of our shopping at the local IGA with occasional visits to Schnuk's as I'm on my way home from St Louis every day. IGA's prices are a little higher than Schnuk's but that's part of the price of living in a small town.

We are on the keto diet. (I'm not touting the benefits of it. We are not religiously attached to it as many vegans I know are attached to their way of life. It works for us. We like it.) We have not gone down the canned vegetable aisle in months so I cannot attest to what is or isn't there. And we tend to buy only high-fiber vegetables.

I try to eat a salad every day and did notice a couple of days ago that the only onions that were in stock were Vidalias - no reds, no Spanish whites, no yellows. I'm not opposed to supporting the farmers of Toombs County, GA, so I bought the Vidalias.

At Schnuk's a couple of weeks ago I couldn't find any chicken thighs. There were wings, breasts, legs and even whole, cut-up chickens. This was kind of a head-scratcher for me. How can you not have thighs?

As I was doing a quick search for references on this article, I found that there was at least one forum that was no longer up.

Back in June I'd done a video about the Mississippi flooding around Chester, IL. I talked about some of my thoughts there.
