This is a very special poem. I created this poem as tribute to James Baldwin, an influential African-American Poet. Included I will attach my visuals for the poem! I hope you enjoy!
WHEREICOMEFROM
Our crown has already been bought and paid for. All we have to do is wear it.
-James Baldwin
Where I’m from crowns hang from trees
Who wants to be royalty if it means we gotta bleed
Dealing with wars internal and externally
But hey, At least I can wear it in my dreams.
Where I come from crowns hang from trees
Atop the bodies of sacred kings and queens
There’s nothing holy about dying in the streets
But we still live our ancestors' wildest dreams.
Where I come from I’m not afraid to die
So I pick up there treasure and hold it high
My golden crown sits above my third eye
My copper skin glows under the sky
Where I come from love is all we need
For ourselves for our brothers never greed
In fact if we could only think to heed
The words of our elders who gave air just for us to breathe.
Where I come from they’ve already died,
They fought hard and so that spirit still resides
Within this crown that Has fallen from the sky
Where I’m from this crown is more than pride
Where I come from, I’m wearing it
And if I see my fam down then you oughta know I’m sharing it
It’s more than blood that stain on the leaves
Behind the grief is a king with a dream.
Where I come from
