What is Ethereum?

I am intrigued by Ethereum.

Is it a digital currency? Is it a a financial payment system? Is it a "The internet of assets" that their website claims?  You can find out more here: https://ethereum.org/en/

I know it is the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap as I write this. Ethereum was priced at $1295 as I was thinking about it. This is down from it's ATH of $4891.70. If I do the math correctly, it is over 70% below that ATH at this time.  As I am new to cryptocurrency, I find that price both intriguing and a bit intimidating. I have read a lot about this recently as well as I have read a lot about the supposed "Ethereum killer" Cardano.  Some so called experts say that Cardano will overtake Ethereum and others say Cardano will always stay second rate.  I am not sure what to think. I know that two of the original eight co-founders of Ethereum have started rival cryptocurrency's. One is Charles Hoskinson of Cardano fame.

I know that for someone who is skeptical of the cryptocurrency world, it is easier to stomach buying some Cardano as it is priced at $.36 at this time.  However, there has been reported to be a total of 120 million Ethereum, and a total of 45 billion coins or tokens. This by nature allows for a long term ATH for Ethereum considering market cap and valuation to be significantly higher than Cardano ever could be.

I like the concept of Ethereum and it's diversity of uses. It recently upgraded from a Proof of Work to a Proof of Stake concept. It also announced, as of yesterday from what I can gather (at least from the sources I have found) there will be another upgrade called Shanghai in 2023 https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2022/10/17/the-next-major-ethereum-upgrade-shanghai-now-has-a-testnet/ . This will supposedly address efficiency and scalability issues.

So far when researching and learning about cryptocurrency I go by some simple but important thinking in regards to use and does it have a solid foundation. I think Ethereum has both. I also love the fact that it continued to innovate and grow in a bear market. This suggests a solid foundation and a great likelihood to set a new ATH in the next bull run.

As I have stated in previous posts, I am not offering any sort of financial advice. I am documenting my own thoughts regarding my journey of learning and discovery in the cryptocurrency world. Nothing should be construed as financial advice. I have invested in some of the cryptocurrency projects I have outlined, and have not invested in others I have outlined.  I am just fascinated by the whole thing and the possibilities.

Cryptocurrency is a fascinating idea, one that has many confused, scared and dismissive of the concept. However, it also is intriguing and likely a large part of the future.
