Cryptocurrency: Overheard at Thanksgiving

At thanksgiving dinner there were several family members, who have had successful business careers and investing careers talking about cryptocurrency.

I was listening to them talk about it. The conversation went something like this: There was a young guy who had worked for them and had left the business last spring. The young man left the business to pursue a career in investing in cryptocurrency. Apparently, the man at the time had made a few million dollars from investing in cryptocurrency.  Now, (given the market is down) he had lost all of the profit.

They talked about this as the reason why cryptocurrency is not worth anything, and that it has no future. I would disagree with that statement. If that same man would have invested in anything at that time, his total profit would be nothing, and he would have lost money as well!

All of the markets are down. Yes, there are a few stocks, and possibly even some cryptocurrency that are even or up in the past six months. the point is, we should not take one single incident and denounce an entire industry.

I was a skeptic of cryptocurrency until a few months ago. I have read a lot about it so far. I am no expert on it, or on investing in general. However, one does not lose money until they sell for a loss. You lose value when a market goes down and gain value when it goes up. You only lose when you sell.

If the "young man" from the story did not sell (they did not get that far in the story) he did not lose anything other than value at the time.

What I have learned about cryptocurrency is that if you let your emotions control your decisions, it is not for you. I could say that for regular investing as well.

Cryptocurrency is a fascinating idea, one that has many confused, scared and dismissive of the concept. However, it also is intriguing and likely a large part of the future.
