5 things to do in Yamaguchi

By cryotosensei | travelinJapan | 19 Jun 2024

Mr Hirobumi Ito, a native of Yamaguchi, was Japan’s first prime minister. This proud tradition has continued, and even now, the number of prime ministers hailing from Yamaguchi is higher than the number from any other prefecture. But what else is Yamaguchi famous for? Let’s find out!

1. Akiyoshi Cave

Be prepared to be enthralled for a few hours as Akiyoshi Cave is the largest underground cave in Asia. Marvel at interesting sights like an underground “Mount Fuji” and a rock formation called “Hyakumaizara” (hundred saucers).

2. Kintaikyo Bridge

Architectural fans will get an adrenaline rush by walking the distinguished Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni. This bridge stands out for its impressive five wooden arches - constructed without any nails!

3. Kaikyo-Yume Tower

Enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Shimonoseki City and the Kanmon Bridge at Western Japan’s highest observation tower. Watch the world go by as cars zoom past and ships sail towards their destination.

4. Fugu

Fugu (Japanese blowfish) is deadly, so to savour its exquisite taste, you ought to visit Shimonoseki, which is the land of blowfish. With only licensed chefs preparing delectable dishes for you, you can rest at ease and tuck into fugu, be it steamed, grilled or even fried.

5. Walk to Fukuoka

Sounds far-fetched since Fukuoka is on a different island from Yamaguchi? Not so! At Shimonoseki, a 780-metres long underwater tunnel will bring you from Yamaguchi to Moji, Fukuoka in 15 minutes. Athletic Japanese run determinedly from one end to the other, so it’s a great way to observe them in action!
