A seemingly trivial question, for those who know a bit of history, and maybe even saw such a device with their own eyes. But I think most young people don't know what it is. Perhaps they know the colloquially circulating saying that "someone is or was in a treadmill", but with a high degree of probability they do not know what they are talking about.

Pytanie niby banalne, dla tych co znają trochę historii, a może nawet sami widzieli na oczy takie urządzenie. Ale myślę że większość młodego społeczeństwa nie wie co to takiego. Być może znają potocznie krążące powiedzenie, że "ktoś jest lub był w kieracie", ale z dużą dozą prawdopodobieństwa nie wiedzą o czym mówią.

I experienced the treadmill visually, I know its use and at some point in my life it accompanied me every day. When I was still visiting my uncle in the early 70's, such devices were very common in the countryside.

Ja doświadczyłem kieratu wizualnie, znam jego zastosowanie i w pewnym okresie mojego życia towarzyszył mi codziennie. Gdy jeździłem jeszcze do mojego stryja, w początku lat 70-tych, to tego typu urządzenia były bardzo powszechne na wsiach.

A mysterious cog wheel at the back of the barn, connected to mysterious metal rods with cogs, powered the machines inside the barn. It used to be the pinnacle of technology.

Tajemnicze koło z zębatkami na tyłach stodoły, podłączone do tajemniczych metalowych prętów z zębatkami napędzało maszyny we wnętrzu stodoły. Kiedyś był to szczyt techniki.

At my uncle's, the horse, which he had as many as 4, was attached to a treadmill and, walking in circles, drove a shaft connected to various mechanical devices in the barn. Most often it was a forage harvester, but there was also a thresher and a windmill. These are devices that young people have no idea about.

U stryja koń, których miał aż 4, przypięty był do kieratu i chodząc w kółko napędzał wał podłączony do różnych urządzeń mechanicznych w stodole. Najczęściej była to sieczkarnia, ale była też młockarnia, wialnia. To urządzenia o których młodzież nie ma pojęcia.

This period did not last long as electrification made rapid progress. Electricity appeared, and with it electric motors, which displaced horses from work. The treadmill became just an exhibit sticking out behind the barn.

Ten okres nie trwał długo, bo elektryfikacja spowodowała szybki postęp. Pojawiła się energia elektryczna, a z nią silniki elektryczne, które wyparły konie z pracy. Kierat stał się tylko eksponatem sterczącym za stodołą.

The horses benefited from it. They have become living exhibits of the past. You could ride them and basically did no more field work, but they stayed on the farm forever.

Konie na tym skorzystały. Stały się żywymi eksponatami przeszłości. Można było na nich pojeździć i w zasadzie nie wykonywały już żadnych prac polowych, ale zostały w gospodarstwie na zawsze.

When they walk around the open-air museum, and I do it quite often, I am reminded of the atmosphere of the old days, where everything was very complicated and at the same time very simple. When I rode a horse bareback, and in the evenings there was a kerosene lamp in the house.

There was always a lot of dark corners, unexplored, mysterious for me, where there was dust, cobwebs, mysterious objects that remain in my memory.

Tam zawsze było mnóstwo mrocznych zakamarków, dla mnie niezbadanych, tajemniczych, gdzie pełno było kurzu, pajęczyn, tajemniczych przedmiotów które pozostają w mojej pamięci.
