Socotra is a very little-known island, a kind of natural wonder that gathers many endemic species of fauna and flora, not found anywhere else in the world.

Socotra to bardzo mało znana wyspa, swoisty cud natury, która gromadzi na swym terenie wiele endemicznych gatunków fauny i flory, nie występujących w żadnych innych miejscach na świecie.

For example, cucumber trees and dragon trees grow here. A scavenger bird from the vulture family also appears there, namely the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus).

Rosną tu na przykład drzewa ogórkowe, czy smocze drzewa. Pojawia się tam również ptak padlinożerca z rodziny sępów, a mianowicie Ścierwnik (Neophron percnopterus).

The White scavenger vulture is also called the Egyptian Vulture because it builds nests on the pyramids and is a scavenger bird. His element is mountains, open spaces, wastelands, and this is what a very little known island belonging to Yemen offers, namely Socotra. Of course, this is not the only place where we can meet this bird. The stubble is found in southern Europe, to the areas of Asia, it can also be found in the areas of Africa and Arabia and all over India. Very rarely, but it also appears in Poland.

Ścierwnik, nosi również nazwę Sęp Egipski, ponieważ buduje gniazda na piramidach jest ptakiem z gatunku padlinożerców. Jego żywiołem są góry, otwarte przestrzenie, pustkowia, i właśnie to oferuje mu bardzo mało znana, wyspa należąca do Jemenu, a mianowicie Socotra. Oczywiście to nie jest jedyne miejsce gdzie spotkać możemy tego ptaka. Ścierwnik zamieszkuje południową Europę, po obszary Azji, spotkać go można także na terenach Afryki oraz Arabii oraz w całych Indiach. Bardzo rzadko, ale pojawia się również w Polsce.

Długość ciała sępa egipskiego może osiągnąć 70 cm, a rozpiętość skrzydeł może wynieść ponad 170 cm. Maksymalna waga natomiast to około 2,5 kg.

Adult vulture individuals have brown-white plumage with black remiges, while young birds are brown in color. Both the front part of the body and the goiter are devoid of feathers, and the skin in this area is yellow. The vulture's legs are also yellow. The beak is massive, dark.

Dorosłe osobniki sępa mają brunatnobiałe upierzenie z czarnymi lotkami, młode ptaki natomiast są koloru brązowego. Zarówno przednia część ciała jak i wole pozbawione są piór, a skóra w tym miejscu ma kolor żółty. Żółte są również nogi sępa. Dziób jest masywny, ciemny.

The Egyptian Vulture is a very sociable bird, it does not mind the proximity of animals or people, it even likes them, it can stay in close proximity to human settlements. Of course, this has nothing to do with sympathy for the species Homo sapiens, it is only about easy access to garbage, rubbish bins and landfills full of food scraps.

Sęp Egipski jest bardzo towarzyskim ptakiem, nie przeszkadza mu bliskość zwierząt ani ludzi, wręcz je lubi, może przebywać w bliskiej odległości od osiedli ludzkich. Oczywiście to nie ma nic wspólnego z sympatią do gatunku homo sapiens, chodzi wyłącznie o łatwy dostęp do odpadków, śmietników i wysypisk pełnych resztek jedzenia.

The stomachs of Egyptian vultures allow them to withstand the most difficult diets, they even eat animal excrement. This bird can break ostrich eggs using tools such as stones. Thanks to a very stretchy stomach, a scavenger can eat a huge staple meal and survive up to several weeks of fasting.

Sęp egipski żywi się wszystkim, ale najczęściej są to martwe zwierzęta padlina. Żołądki sępów egipskich pozwalają im stawić czoła najtrudniejszym dietom, zjadają nawet zwierzęce odchody. Ptak ten potrafi rozbijać strusie jaja używając do tego narzędzi jakimi są kamienie. Dzięki bardzo rozciągliwemu żołądkowi padlinożerca może zjeść ogromny posiłek na zapas i przetrwać nawet kilka tygodni postu.

There are 192 species of both terrestrial and aquatic birds on the island, 44 of which regularly breed on the islands.

Na wyspie doliczono się 192 gatunków ptaków i lądowych i wodnych, z których 44 gatunki regularnie rozmnażają się na wyspach.
