Obviously, the greatest earning opportunity here is getting tipped for your posts. Today, I will talk about the first step in this process: creating engaging titles.
Creating a title that will draw readers to your article is arguably the most important part of the tip-earning process. You'll never get any tips if no one clicks on your post. This is a commonly overlooked element in authorship of any kind. So, what are the key components of an engaging title?
- Your title should present a question, or at least cause the reader to ask themselves a question related to your article. People don't generally like having unanswered questions, so they will be more likely to check your article for answers.
- Your title should be appropriately formatted. Whenever possible, use complete sentences. Avoid the use of colons and hyphens, but otherwise use proper punctuation.
- The question proposed by your title should be argumentative. This does not mean controversial. It simply means that your title should propose a question that has more than one possible answer, allowing you to present your opinion. Argumentative titles encourage readers to investigate your opinion because people like to know whether others agree with them.
- Your title should not answer its own question. You want the reader to have to actually read your whole post to get the answer. Sure, you'll lose the lazy crowd, but they probably weren't going to tip well anyway.
- Use of the APA format for titles is highly encouraged. A professional looking title tells the reader that you are committed to quality and accuracy and that they can probably trust what you say. It doesn't seem like much, but titles with no capital letters or abuse of caps lock are frequently skipped because they are seen as lazy or begging for attention, respectively.
- Expanding upon the idea of credibility, your title should be assertive. Using words of uncertainty like "may, possible, could," and others gives the impression that you are unsure of your own argument, which severely damages your credibility with the reader. If you care enough about it to put your name on a post about it, write like you know what you're talking about. Don't worry about being wrong.
- Your title, being argumentative, should ask a question of opinion, not fact. Facts are either indisputably true or false. That makes them very dry reading material. No one here wants to be bored to tears.
- Your title should be easy to read aloud. Alliteration is to be avoided like the plague (or COVID-19, to use a more relevant reference). If people want to try out tongue twisters, there are better places to look than your post's title. Also, don't use contractions in your title. Again, you want to sound like a professional, educated person whose word can be trusted.
- A little bit of deception is not uncommon practice, but you really shouldn't do this. No one likes being lied to.
- Do not be offensive. Avoid profanity and any other speech that might alienate a certain demographic. The idea is to get as many people as possible to read your post. You can't accomplish that if they find the title repulsive.
- The question presented by your title should be as specific as possible. Generalized questions don't appeal to a larger audience. In fact, they don't appeal to anyone. "Are cops bad" is not nearly as engaging as "Are all cops indoctrinated by a systemically racist criminal justice system?" The first asks a very basic question, while the second already has you wondering if they are or not. Leave a comment if you did a Google search on that question. Yes, seriously.
- Your title's question should appeal and apply to as many people as possible. The title of this article, for example, applies to every user of Publish0x and, I hope, appeals to most of them. This is the exception to the rule against generalization.
- I shouldn't have to say this, but I will anyway: spelling and grammar are important! These testify to your credibility. If you can't be bothered to use the correct word or spelling (e.g. there, their, they're), you probably can't be bothered to research the topic you intend to discuss.
That pretty much covers lesson one. Stay tuned for more pointers on getting the most out of this wonderful platform. Don't forget to check out my website for more ways to earn!
