Elon Musk announced that from now on the Twitter Blue checkmark that signifies verified accounts will cost $8/month, adjusted to PPP for different countries.
The decision is final. With the new Twitter Blue Checkmark users who will pay for the service will have less ads in their feeds, priorities in search, mentions and replies functions.
Personally, I find no reason why you should pay for something that you can have for free in different blogs and social media platforms.
What surprised me, was the way this move was made, at a moment when Elon fired all the members of the Twitter Board making himself the only person able can take such decisions.
The approach was Negotiations Playbook 101:
- Spread rumours that the Twitter Blue Verification will cost $20.
- Have your most trusted friends, partners, fanboys amplify it.
- Have your business partners run polls about it.
- Make the media cover the news.
- Face (expected) backlash.
- Show up the next day and declare that the subscription fee will $8/month.
Everyone feels like they got something. It looks like the new Twitter administration made a concession. In reality the plan was always to charge $8. Yet, Musk had people agree to pay $8/month for a service they were getting for free before.
At the same time users with verified accounts will continue to be the product of Twitter since they will still be targeted by ads in the platform though they are paying a monthly subscription fee.
