Imagine it was the darkest day you had ever experienced. You were camping in a wooded area on the Oregon coast. The cloud cover was so immense, even though it was almost a full moon, no light came through. The flashlight you were using seemed more like a candle for the amount of illumination it gave off. You could almost see two feet in front of you. Looking for the path to a building where your friends where hanging out, you missed it and ended up at the entrance to the park. Thankfully you were able to turn around and make it to your destination.
This happened to me. In the past, that would have terrified me. I would have turned around, or most likely not ventured out at all. But by the grace of our Heavenly Father, He helped me to increase my faith in Him over time, allowing me to walk in the dark.
This may seem like nothing to some people, but growing up I had a lot of fear, especially of the dark, due to the experiences I had. This fear continued to adulthood. With the advice of a friend, I was able to work through it with scripture and prayer. Before I realized it, I was able to walk in such darkness without coming unglued.
Fear is an important issue in the Bible. 365 times the Bible tells us not to fear. That’s once for every day of the year. If you do an internet search on the effects of fear, you will find that long-term fear is damaging to our health. So it is easy to see why He tells us not to fear. He knows what is best for us. What a blessing our God is.
If we had perfect parents, we could always trust them to do what is best for us, right? Our Heavenly Father is THE perfect parent. He has knowledge that our earthly parents (and ourselves) do not have. He also has a love for us that we cannot fathom. Once we learn that, we can release the fear and trust Him. I’ve heard it said, fear is having faith in evil. Wouldn’t life be better if we had more faith in Him who loves us instead?
“So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.”
Matthew 10:31
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28
