I recently moved about 2,400 miles away. The experience was anything but fun, especially having to go through the stuff to pack. (Thanks to my BFF, it wasn't as bad as it could have been.) I do have praise for a company that helped me with my move. I decided not to drive a U-Haul across the country. It's not that I couldn't do it. But I didn't want to. So I looked in to other options.
I was originally going to use the PODS (pods.com), however, they did not service the area I was leaving. So I kept looking. I ended up using the company U-Pack (upack.com). I chose to spend the extra $350 to guarantee a delivery date. Because I chose this option, my pickup and delivery was a priority for all drop off and pick up times. Let me back track and explain their service.
They drop off a truck trailer (18-wheeler type). After it is loaded and secured with straps, a bulkhead must be put in place in front of the stuff. The bulkhead is for privacy and NOT for holding the load. Padlocks can be put on the bulkhead too, if desired. Once it's ready, it's time to call them for pick up. The trailer then goes to one of their main hubs to fill the rest of the trailer with commercial items. (They use ABF Freight trucks). It is possible to watch the movement of the trailer by logging onto their website. Once it arrives at the hub closest to the destination, it's time to call for drop off. Then after it is unloaded, the last call for pick up is needed. That's it. All done.

U-Pack charges by the distance and the linear foot used. The trailer can be packed up to the top to allow less space to be used. I wasn't crazy about the cost, but when I estimated how much it would be for a U-haul (including the cost of gas), I think the cost difference wouldn't have been much. The biggest cost difference, I believe, was that I had to then drive my car instead of using a U-Haul dolly to tow it.
I was glad to be able to track the movement as the timing of my move was during severe weather. My stuff was delivered a day earlier than promised. All scheduling was required to be made the day (or more) before. And because of the priority on my load, the drop off and pickup times were always in the morning (before 11:00 a.m.). Everyone was very pleasant, from the people on the phone, to the truck drivers dropping off or picking up the trailer.
Overall it was a very positive experience. I believe it was worth it to use U-Pack's service. It made for a much less stressful drive across the country for me. (Even though my drive was not uneventful.)
If you are planning a move and want to use U-Pack, you will want to reserve it as soon as possible. Of course, this is true of any moving service. Also, be aware that they do not supply blankets or a dolly. If you're moving soon, I hope you have a pleasant experience.
