In a bit more sad crypto news, Binance has decided to exit the Dutch market. This was fairly shortly after they exited the Canadian market previously this year.
What does this mean for Binance and its users?
While I have not seen the email sent out to the Duch Binance users. I assume it is very similar to the one sent out to Canadian users a while back. Asking them to transfer their funds and make the proper arrangement, and informing them that deposits and trades have been stopped. also hit the streets the day after Binance's plans to leave the Cyprus market were revealed. This was only a few days after the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission put Binance Cyprus “under examination for application for deregistration” on its website. Sort of letting the cat out of the bag.
But why the sudden exodus from so many markets?
There appear to be as many reasons as there are exits. Regarding Canada, Binance and other crypto exchanges were more or less being forced out of the country due to the new regulations being put in place. Where the Duch market is concerned it appears that Binance failed to secure a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license. A license that is needed in order to operate in the Netherlands. Something Binance where fined $3m for not having last year. Regarding Cyprus, Binance has stated that their exiting that market is due to them refocusing on the bigger European market.
And with the new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations that have been put into effect in the EU recently. It sort of makes sense that they would focus their efforts there, securing their ability to work within the EU first, and then expand again from there. Binance has stated that the EU will be their main focus for the coming 18 months. Who knows maybe this will eventually mean they will return to the Netherlands soon as well.
There have been a lot of, let us call it, unfavorable Binance news as of late. With the pending suit by the SEC and fear in the market over whether Binance would dump Bitcoin to try and prop up the price of $BNB to them exiting several markets. Hopefully, this will all mean that it is nothing more than a pruning of weak branches and that Binance will be able to come out of this stronger than they went in. Because we do not need another large crypto company to fail right now, not that I think it is a very likely thing to happen. But I am merely stating the facts, be it Binance, Coinbase, or any other large crypto company.
