Storj Acquires PetaGene, Creator of Distributed Mount Client CunoFS
Storj might not be a household crypto name, however, they are built for Web 3.0 from the ground up. Storj was first introduced to the world as a concept, decentralized peer-to-peer encrypted cloud storage platform. So have stated that Storj brings revolutionary technology not seen since Amazon AWS intro'd S3 protocol.
Early this week Storj announced intent to acquire PetaGene, creator of cunoFS. One can surmize Storj is building out on their acquisition of distributed GPU provider, Valdi earlier this year.
Let's jump into both of their growth projections:

Who is PetaGene and what are they brining to the table?
PetaGene works with leaders in genomics and clinical research including the NHS in England and Wales, AstraZeneca, NVIDIA, CeGaT, Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, the largest pediatric cancer center in Europe, and major player in children’s hospitals in the US market.
What else? Storj and cunoFS already joint work together with customers such as Cambridge University / DiRAC, and partners including Cambridge Computer, CineSys LLC and Tyrell. As it turns out Valdi was a close partner of PetaGene too. More business synergies should make these acquisitions smoother enabling faster time to market. The key technology I assume Storj acquired them for is their lossless compression as its fast, secure and can reduce massive genome data into something more manageable.
PetaGene clients
- Linux client
- Intro'd a Native Windows client earlier this year at IBC 2024
- macOS client is expected late this year
After this acquisition, what will Storj offering?
- distributed cloud object storage,
- distributed on-demand GPU compute, ---> Theta does this too. Any alarm bells going off?
- and distributed file storage mount.
Summary
Well I think I might have a contender to knock Theta down a few notches in my favorite category. I see Media and entertainment use cases for Storj VFX Drag and Drop functionality
