news
bitcoin is approaching an important moment as the united states prepares for its midterm elections on november 3. while political attention is focused on washington, institutional investors are sending a different signal: money is flowing out of bitcoin etfs.
on october 30, us spot bitcoin etfs recorded approximately $643.2 million in net outflows, their largest single-day withdrawal since june 25. this wiped out around 63.6% of their cumulative net inflows for 2026 in just one trading session.
blackrock's ibit alone recorded approximately $233.7 million in outflows.
this matters because etf redemptions can create selling pressure when funds sell bitcoin to meet investor withdrawals. if outflows continue, bitcoin could struggle to recover even when market sentiment improves.
another signal worth watching is the coinbase premium. a negative premium can indicate weaker buying demand on coinbase compared with other exchanges, although it should not be treated as a standalone indicator of market direction.
why washington still matters
the us midterm elections could have a longer-term impact on the cryptocurrency industry.
according to the figures in the reports, crypto-related political spending has reached approximately $176 million across more than 100 midterm races. fairshake and its affiliated political action committees account for around $150.8 million.
one major issue is the proposed clarity act, which aims to establish clearer regulatory responsibilities between the sec and cftc.
the legislation stalled during the current congressional session, meaning the next congress could influence whether it moves forward, gets changed or faces further delays.
clearer regulations could encourage more institutions to participate in the crypto market. however, political support does not automatically translate into immediate bitcoin purchases.
wall street vs washington: which matters more?
in my view, wall street has the greater influence on bitcoin's short-term price.
etf flows show where institutional capital is moving right now. when large amounts of money leave these products, it can create immediate pressure on the market.
washington is different. elections and legislation can influence the industry's direction, institutional confidence and the regulatory environment, but those changes generally take time.
bitcoin also responds to broader market conditions, including interest rates, the us dollar, liquidity and investor appetite for risk.
this is why i would not focus entirely on election headlines while ignoring what institutional investors are doing.
my take
i think the biggest mistake would be assuming that a favourable election result automatically makes bitcoin bullish.
political optimism can improve sentiment, but it cannot replace actual buying demand.
the $643 million in etf outflows is a signal worth taking seriously, especially if similar withdrawals continue. at the same time, one day of outflows does not necessarily mean institutions have abandoned bitcoin.
i would keep watching three things: bitcoin etf flows, the coinbase premium and the broader performance of risk assets.
my final thoughts
washington may influence bitcoin's future, but wall street is helping determine its present.
regulatory clarity could make the market more attractive to institutions over time. however, bitcoin needs fresh capital and sustained demand to build a stronger recovery.
elections create the narrative. flows help create the price.
which one are you watching more closely this week: the us midterm elections or institutional bitcoin etf flows?
