Travelling by train is the BEST!

One thing that I will definitely miss about Europe is the high speed rail network that connects all the major cities... and well, even quite a lot of the not-major ones as well! Travelling by train is always much more relaxing than travelling by plane, even if it is a touch slower for the longer distances... on the other hand, if you can just plan for the extra travel time and minimise the number of connections... there is something really quite nice about sitting down and just relaxing for the next few hours!

It does mean that sometimes I have to start the journey quite a fair bit earlier in the morning to get from our little train station to a major international hub before I can join the high speed rail network... however, when I take the train to Schiphol for early morning flights, I have to the same thing anyway... so, for travelling o Germanany or France, I really prefer getting to either Amersfoort (to go east) or Rotterdam (to go south)... it also gives me an excuse to have a very very healthy breakfast of icecream!

On board the fast trains on the German side, there is the added benefit that each seat comes with a proper power supply as well! 90W max, which is just good enough for running a gaming laptop at full tilt, so I can pass the next 8 or so hours playing some high quality games like Control having the fans blast out at full cooling tilt to annoy the rest of the orchestra!

Or I can just zone out with some downloaded Netflix films and Tv series without worrying about whether the battery will hold out for the next 8 hours or not... hint, with a gaming laptop, that is definitely a NOT! Even with the stupidly huge battery that this XMG Fusion is packed with, if you are hitting up the GPU at full blast, you will be lucky to get two hours out of it!

So, unforutnately, Australia doesn't have an equivalent network of fast rail... but hopefully that will come... however, I do think that in Australia it is a problem of low densitiy of people and the vast distances that are the major obstacles to the high-speed rail... even on the more heavily populated Eastern corridor. But I have to say, once you experience fast trains done right... it is hard to argue for plane travel!

Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life! I'm a Violinist and doing what I love is often interestingly contrasted with the reality of getting to do what I love...
