The Canberra Royal Show is one of the agricultural shows in Australia that originally were designed as trade fairs. These trade fairs were a way for country and city folk to mingle and exchange goods/services, and an interesting part of them were the various crafting competitions that sprung up around the "business" side of things to take upon a life of their own. Of course, these days... most people will know the Royal Shows as a fairground and showbag thing... but if you take the time to explore behind the loud noises and bright lights, you will see some really interesting things!
So, when our little family went to the Canberra Show, we saw all the animals...all the prizewinning fruits and flower arrangements, all the various crafts and winners of all the crafting categories... and even the winners of baking and cooking contests! Sadly, you don't get to try out all the foods... but you can view the cakes everything!
However, for me... these fruit platters were among my favourites of the whole experience. When I do a fruit thing to serve up... generally the best that I manage is to just chop stuff up and perhaps toss it all together as a fruit salad. However, there are some people that just take the extra effort and go that one step further and come up with these amazing fruit and vegetable designs!
Take for instance, the lead photo... this was the one that caught my eye as I recognised a VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR!
I'm thinking that this design is in loving memory of a beloved pet cat?
Haha... radish ants! Somehow, this one is a touch more for show... unless you like eating raw beans and cauliflower! Even if it was fully edible, I think I would be a little un-nerved by the eerily lifelike ants!
For some reason, this particular design is a little unsettling... it looks to me lie there is something sinister going on here. I'm pretty sure that I'm wrong... but it just doesn't look completely innocent!
Mr Potato Head! A Classic!
An Octopus... I'm sure that the NSA would love to adopt this fruit platter as their mascot!
... hmmm, see the resemblance. However, this wasn't one of my favourite ones... on the other hand, it is one of the more functional designs, with the ability to take a fruit stick out of the back of the peacock to start chomping away!
I'm not really sure what this is... but it is pretty cute! I'm thinking that it is a Llama... on the other hand, I could have been influenced by the fact that we had just come from the petting zoo where we were just playing with Llamas!... But it really really looks like one!
