Day three of the painting job... and it is pretty much all wrapped up successfully! No explosions or fires... so, in my eyes, that is a success! As a bonus, it looks like the painting seems to be okay... and the top of the patio and doors are now weatherproofed for a bit longer!
Anyway, the start of the morning began earlyish... I was planning for a 800 start, but it ended up being closer to about 930. Ahhhh... sleeping in is really quite nice for parents of kids who don't have to be raced off to school!
So, the first job was to do the primer of the patio tops. This had been sanded back yesterday and all the cracks filled in preparation for this. It wasn't too tricky... but it would have all been much easier if I didn't have to be constantly moving a ladder around the place! At the start I was really quite careful about not getting the primer over the sides... but after a while, I was a bit more gung-ho with it. After all, it would later be covered by the top coat paint anyway... and it was high up off the ground that it wouldn't be that noticeable... plus, it would also weather away with time.... and I do still need to eventually paint the sides!
Being a little bit more slapdash with amount of primer also meant that I could go a great deal faster. The top of the patio didn't need to be quite as carefully done as the sides of the doors. The coat could be thicker... and probably needed to be thicker due to the exposed area.
So, after the primer was done... I was going to make a start on the proper paint coat for the doors. However, a sudden IKEA pickup was being called for (my wife had ordered something, and I didn't want her to pick up heavy objects with her bad back). Plus, I had some things to pick up from the post office... and I also needed to pick up a small paint jar. I didn't want to be lugging up and down the big paint tin... and possible splattering a whole can of paint on the verandah!
So, the tops, sides, and bottoms of the two doors were done with a careful thin coat of outdoor paint... Woodland Grey it is... strange name, it looks very much like green to me. It is a sort of Australian staple colour, I think it does resemble the /blue greens of Australian nature.
... and then a quick heavy first coat for the tops of the patio... these were in dire need of a repaint, I'm not sure that the previous owners really took that much care of maintenance.
Anyway... tomorrow, I will do the second coat. I had planned to have everything all completed today, but the sudden chore run took a couple of hours out of the day. Plus, I had promised my kids that I would do some spare ribs for them yesterday, and that had already been put off to today. So, spare ribs preparation took precedence over the second coat.... and I was starting to get eaten by mosquitoes anyway, so I was more keen to go inside!
I'm pretty happy with the results of the paint job. I've learnt a few things, and so I'm going to be happier when it comes around to doing the rest of the house... those pesky window and door frames really need to be done... they are flaking like crazy! Sigh... why don't people look after their houses?
