Two little gaming present for myself!

Ah well... no one else will buy me gaming presents, so I'm going to just have to do it myself! Now, I really try to avoid buying launch games... and even games on sale... because of my Humble Bundle which gives me lots and lots of really pretty decent games (this month is a case in point, and a little bit of regret in buying a couple of the bundle in a recent Steam sale!).

Anyway, I couldn't resist this time... Two games had just launched that I just really really really really wanted! And so, as a little bit of a Christmas treat to myself... I just picked them both up at full price.... well, actually, full price plus a 10 percent discount due to the Humble Bundle subscription which I get when I buy games through that storefront (keys to redeem on Steam).

... and so, it was great excitement that I checked out with Marvel's Midnight Suns and Dwarf Fortress. Midnight Suns, I immediately loaded up on the Steam Deck... and Dwarf Fortress went straight into downloading on the gaming laptop (a bit of overkill, but hey... who cares!).

Now, on the Steam Deck, I have been really getting into Persona 5... a game that I had long been waiting to be ported over onto the PC. Actually, when it did land on PC... that was another moment of splashing out on myself! Well.. Persona is really great, and it does mean that I have been playing quite a bit on the Deck... more than my gaming rig or laptop!

However, given the reviews that I had seen on Midnight Suns, it appeared that it would be a good fit for the Steam Deck. There were a few complaints that the graphics were a bit dated... and so, it would be less noticeable on the smaller screen. Plus, the deck style of gameplay with some positioning would be better suited to the Deck's control inputs for me!

And, upon firing it up... yes, it did look a little dated... but I had dialed down the graphics settings so that I wouldn't be burning battery duration. However, it was a GREAT fit for the Deck... which made the disappointing crash after the tutorial even more disappointing. I will try verifying the game files and rebooting the experimental Proton OS when I get back to home internet... but it was such a letdown whilst I was on the road travelling. Sad face... anyway, it did mean that I could get back to concentrating on the STILL AWESOME Persona 5 on the Deck!

Meanwhile, on the gaming laptop... Dwarf Fortress! This game has been out since forever as a ASCII sort of game. Super detailed, and the spiritual godfather of games like RimWorld... this is the simulator's dream game! I had played it lots in the past... and now that there is an updated new and shiny (shiny for ASCII roguelikes...) graphical interface, I want to dive back into the emergent and procedurally generated universe of leading a bunch of dwarves into a simulation of simulations! This is the dream game for hardcore nerds of TRUE roguelikes! A game which doesn't give a crap about you and your desire to be the god of some stupid game... you are going to struggle, and eke out an existence!

Ahhhhhh... I sense that my game backlog will get even more backlogged with these solid games taking up most of my gaming time for what will likely be the better part of a year... or years! Persona 5, Midnight Suns, and Dwarf Fortress! What more could an old-school, hardcore gamer nerd want in their lives?
