The sod is turned. The dirt is actual dirt.
On June 17th, in the Queensland sun, with federal ministers and mayors and a man named Victor Peng standing on what used to be a paper mill, PsiQuantum broke ground on what it calls the worlds first utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer.
A paper mill. Thats where we're building the next era of computation, on the bones of an industry that printed the last one. I find that beatiful and I find it faintly absurd and I suspect both of those things are true at the same time, just like quantum itself.
Here is what I want to say about the quantum investment sector and I'll say it plain becuase someone should say it: it has been, for most of its recent history, a spectacular, shimmering, perpetually-deferred promis, always five years out, always one breakthrough short of relevance, always radiantly confident in a future that keeps refusing to arrive on schedule, and the smart money has been watching it with the particular patience of people who suspect they're either geniuses or suckers and haven't yet been told which.
The joint $940 million AUD investment from the Australian federal and Queensland governments, a mix of equity and grants and loans, had controversy baked right into it from the start, advisory firm McGrathNicol was brought in for a lessons-learned review after Senate documents revealed the federal department had originally recommended AGAINST using the National Reconstruction Fund to bankroll it.
Then the timeline slipped.
The original plan called for operational status by end of 2027, which is now 2029, and in January it came out at Senate Estimates that the whole thing was behind, and somewhere in Canberra somebody was no doubt quietly updating a very long spreadsheet.
But now there is a cryoplant on order from Linde Engineering, a cryoplant that will be one of the largest ever built for quantum computing, a genuinely enormous physical object being manufactured in the actual world and scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2027, and you cannot fake that, you cannot render a cryoplant in Figma and call it a roadmap, it is steel and engineering and industrial commitment, and it is coming to Queensland, to Petrie, to a precinct built on the site of an old paper mill that from paper to photons has quietly and somewhat poetically made the journey no one predicted, where the hum of old machinery gives way now to the cold silence that photonic chips require, and where the future of computation is being assembled, phase by phase, cabinet by cabinet, chip by chip, in the subtropical heat of a city that just three months ago reached agreement with PsiQuantum on the site.
Three months. The deal was done in three months. That is fast.
That is SHOCKINGLY fast for a government-adjacent infrastructure project of this scale and the speed of it tells you something about how seriously both parties are taking the window.
We stand at a precipice. The sod is turned. The cryoplant is being built.
And the investors who treat quantum as a ten-year structural bet rather than a near-term trade are the ones who will, in time, look like they were paying attention while everyone else was still asking when.
