The numbers are the kind that make a founder in Berlin or Bangalore close the laptop and stare at a wall for a while.
Crunchbase put fresh data out on July 1st, the H1 funding report says global venture investment hit 510 billion dollars in the first half of 2026, and if your first reaction is relief, some kind of oh good the money is flowing, slow down, cause the flow only moves one direction and that direction has a zip code, a street address, practically a doorbell.
Eighty eight percent.
Thats the figure Crunchbase attached to AI related startup funding this year, three hundred and nineteen billion dollars, and the lion's share landed on exactly two names, OpenAI and Anthropic.
Two companies.
Not two countries, not two continents, two companies, hoovering up capital like the rest of the world was never invited to the table, and if your building something clever in Nairobi or Ho Chi Minh City or even Toronto, the money doesn't know you exist yet, it has billion dollar rounds to close and no particular reason, none at all, to look up and notice you standing there.
If your not headquartered in San Francisco and your not training a frontier model, the capital is not coming, not this year, maybe not next year either, and pretending otherwise is a nice way to run out of runway with a smile on your face.
Silicon, stacked and stupidly expensive, sings softly to itself in a datacenter somewhere while founders form the rest of the world are form filling grant applications instead.
I'd say the cash is stacked but the map is cracked, which doesn't scan quite right but neither does the year we're having, and when North American startups pulled in a staggering 392 billion dollars for the first half of the year, per Crunchbase's own count, a number that dwarfs anything logged before, it starts feeling less like a market correcting itself and more like a market that already decided who gets to play, the instinct is to call it a boom, but a boom is supposed to lift everyone and this one is lifting maybe four zip codes while the rest of the map sits in the dark, squinting at a glow it cant get near.
WAIT. Hold on a second.
Because this feels less like weather and more like a decision, a door closing while everybody's still cheering the fireworks.
China raised over 33 billion dollars this year already, more than all of last year combined, so its not nothing, its not nowhere. The UK's doing fine too, fintech and AI carrying it. But fine is a word you use when your comparing yourself to a rounding error.
So if your outside the bubble, the move probably isn't waiting for the wave to widen, cause it might not, the smarter move might be picking a lane the frontier labs cant be bothered with, too small for a hundred billion dollar round and too useful to ignore, and building there on the sly while the giants argue about GPUs.
Ninety six percent of the world's population lives outside America. Somebody's going to notice that gap eventually.
Might as well be you!
