I have been a Beatles fan for years now. I remember going through their discography, falling in love with their music, listening through their changing sounds with each album. This was the most dramatic musical act if you ask me, you can hear them evolve with each passing album. They touched, even invented or popularized so many genres its unprecedented.
It was a heartbreaking moment when I learned about their break up, I wanted more of their music it just wasn't enough. So I dived into their solo work and explored a whole lot of brilliant music. This is when I came across these home demos which John recorded at his some studio, consisting on songs he wrote during his time in India, a few Piano demos of his "fab four" era, some anthology series songs and a few unreleased gems.
I came across songs like 'India India', a simple yet beautiful song by Lennon. He also wrote a song about Rishikesh (a city in India), which he would later change the lyrics to and release as 'Jealous guy' during his solo career. This is when I came across, what would then end up becoming my favorite song, Now and then. It was an incomplete track which he played on the Piano and it is said that when Yoko handed over this tape to the remaining Beatles for the anthology series, it was addressed to Paul. This song although incomplete completely blew my mind, the chord shapes the manipulation of the minor chords in the signature Lennon style, it was the best thing.
At the time this song was not released anywhere, the only place you'd find it was on some random channel on Youtube or an old musical archive library. I used to listen to it all the time and even covered it on my keyboard. Fast forward a few years and The Beatles come up with a new release, "Now and Then". I was extremely thrilled by this announcement and really excited about it's release.
As much as I love the Paul, I did not like the version that they released, it was highly processed, much cleaner, had more elements to it, but they dropped one of my favorite parts of the song, I still like the song but if you ask me, I would still prefer Lennon's original demo to the released rendition.
It is such a weird feeling, I went years listening to this song and didn't cross a single human who knew it, that song kind of became personal, only a handful of people had ever heard of it, so when they actually released it, i felt a little disappointed, but also happy at the same time.
Any Beatles' fans reading this you all should check out Lennon's original demo of Now and Then, it might not be available on youtube anymore, because Apple corps took it down, but you can find it on some old archives, just Google it.
