Today Starship SN 9 finally took off for its test flight and just like the Starship before it the landing..... well it did not go as planned. SN 9 launched and traveled as it should have before it performed its flip maneuver and trying to reignite its engines again. While the engines did reignite the landing was uncontrolled and it exploded on impact with the ground.
What is interesting and something I have to look more into is how the FAA responded. It came out right before launch that SpaceX launched SN 8 without authorization as they were denied a waver they wanted. When SN 9 failed to land and exploded the FAA announced it would be overseeing an investigation into this "accident". Given that Elon is a trial by fire person I wonder why the FAA would be upset about this "accident". SpaceX had SN 10 right by where SN 9 took off and failed to land. Elon does not want Starship to knock other Starships out so obviously this was not the plan.... It will be interesting to see how long this delays SN 10 since it is assembled and located right by the launch pad but hopefully, the FAA gets whatever they want/need to allow SpaceX to move forward with testing.
Regardless flight engineers did say more vital data was collected from the flight especially at the high altitude test (this launch went 10km or roughly 6 miles in the air). I wonder how if they will alter anything to SN 10 even though it has been assembled. If the tests revealed some flaw that might be preventing the landing from occurring but with people monitoring Starship around the clock any alterations will be quickly reported!
