It is safe to say that today has been an absolute hell of a day. While it wasn't so bad starting off I had various twists and turns I have come to expect working on the Hill. After all, there is a method to my madness of getting into work an hour to an hour and a half before we start and that's to clear off and up as much as I can. Today though something different happened in the afternoon and it wasn't until I was told about how my reaction was concerning one of our new employees how numb I have become to the new normal we operate under.
At 2:30 PM this afternoon texts and alerts went out to all staff and others who subscribe from Capitol Hill PD locking down the entire Senate side of the Campus. Why? There were reports of an active shooter in one of the buildings on the Senate side. Just like that in the middle of the workday, everything had gone sideways and we were having to lock our office doors as a precaution. Oh, and I forgot to throw in that we had people on the Committee scattered throughout the Campus so logistical nightmare.
We ended up being released to work from home the rest of the day by the time that they cleared all the buildings on the Senate side. This took approximately two and a half to three hours. During this time of lockdown, our newish staff assistant asked me why I was so calm and level-headed about it why I didn't really show any emotion, and why no one who had been on the Hill for a long time was and it was then I realized the impact Jan 6th and the following events had on me along with most of us. So many of us are used to threats, suspicious packages, and vehicles, not to mention the multiple suspicious substances that have caused areas to lock down. We as staff are all just numb to it.
Tomorrow is also going to be a huge mess as well. The reason? Trump is due back in the District to head back to court for additional charges. It will be media-free for all and could cause additional huge security issues throughout the day as well. There could be protests, counterprotests, and general crap security is already being boosted and that was before this all. Ironically this manages to tie into crypto though as the Bitfinex hacker couple was due to formally enter their plea tomorrow but the Courts knowing that it is a huge mess have rescheduled the court date for a later time. It has been a hell of a week and honestly, I cannot be happier that I already took Friday off so I only have to deal with one more day.
Heres to a day that doesn't go sideways tomorrow.....
