Preparing for the 6th

If you have not been keeping up with United States politics right now let me in on something.... January 6th, in two days, is a huge huge deal. As many know Trump does not want to leave office and has been trying to find a way to stay in office. He has flipped over every rock and stone in the world to find it and is down to his last one.

So what is the deal about January 6th you might wonder? Well on January 6th the new Congress confirms or validates the last election. The Electoral College has cast their votes for the people so that number is finalized. These votes are then sent to Congress and state by state they either validate them or deny them. Congress pretty much has always validated them as if they do not those votes are not "cast" for the candidate. This means that if a majority of the House of Representatives votes against the states Trump lost or even a couple of them those votes no longer are counted and he could in theory remain in office.

This has never happened before but my roommate who works in a Congressional Office himself answered over 500 phone calls today. With an office staff of 5 people total that over 2,500 people in one day! Trump has called for his supporters to have mass protests on the 6th when the vote is supposed to take place. Recently you have seen some Republicans in the House and Senate state how they would vote either for or against. In recent memory, this has never happened and so it is crazy to see this occurring. My poor mom back in Texas was unaware of the severity of this situation and called me today asking me if I had enough food for a few days because the National Guard had been called in.

Fences have been popping up over the last few days all over the place. Not only are some places already closed and boarded up but they also are installing fencing. The police have begun to close all of the streets around the Congressional Offices and House of Reps because they are adding even more security. It is crazy to see this city begin to really go into a shelter in place type atmosphere as people are both going about their days but also the tension could easily be cut with a knife.

I hope everyone is staying safe out there and doing well!
