Meet the Tesla Model Y

By Lucasgaio | Tesla | 2 May 2023

Tesla is a company that manufactures, among other things, fully electric motor cars. The segment that deals with cars is highly developed and optimized to produce a very large quantity of vehicles while maintaining prices below the industry standard and quality (in terms of performance) superior to many other manufacturers. Performance is one of the factors that convinced me to invest in their products: a Tesla, in fact, consumes much less than an equal competitor and delivers much more power. Thanks to this efficiency, combined with a very innovative corporate vision (one could mention the autonomous ordering experience without dealers and many other small things) sales are constantly increasing and more and more people are approaching electric mobility. However, I will not go into the merits of the environmental case as it is still much debated and is not one of the reasons that prompted me to invest.

Why Model Y

Tesla produces four car models: Model S, Model X, Model Y and Model 3. Each of these has two or more versions that differ mainly in power and total range. Each vehicle is supplied almost full-optional and only a few things can be added or removed in the configurator. In particular, Model Y is available in Standard, Long Range and Performance versions. Excluding Model S and X which were out of budget for me, Model 3 was too small for a family of 4 and Model Y had the characteristics of space and price I needed. I obviously chose the rear-wheel drive Standard version, which delivers about 350 (undeclared) horsepower and has about 400km of autonomy (more than enough for me, as I do about 100 a day). Furthermore, this version mounts batteries with LFP chemistry that allow them to be recharged in a more versatile way and suffer less stress than those mounted on the other models.

Numbers

However, what convinced me to buy Model Y is not even the technology, but its total cost. I specify that by "total cost" I refer to the cost of the vehicle added to the cost of maintenance and consumption. In fact, I am of the opinion that to move from point A to point B it is necessary to spend as little as possible. So let's analyze how much it costs to move around with this car. Let's obviously start from the cost of the vehicle, which is not a small figure: in fact, we are talking about €50,000 which, however, can be effectively paid in installments without paying more than a lot of interest. The reader will have to excuse me if I don't elaborate on how to reduce the interest on the loan, but I will certainly explain it in one of my next posts. Continuing, in addition to the cost of the vehicle, those who own a car know that there are a whole series of other costs that weigh on the owner during the life of the car. Now I will list the main ones:

  • Consumption in relation to the road travelled: on Tesla Model Y it is very low (150Wh/km) and just €10 is enough to fill up at home (this depends on the contract with your energy supplier).
  • Car property tax, this is different for each state, in Italy about €250 a year for a medium-sized vehicle. For electric vehicles it is free for the first 5 years and then it is discounted by 75%.
  • Comprehensive insurance policy. On a 50k car you can't think of driving without road insurance. Tesla produces some of the safest vehicles in the world and for this reason the policies cost less on average.

In addition to all this, there are currently many free or subscription public charging stations, which help to reduce the incidence of the total cost of charging. Adding up the various costs (fuel, taxes and insurance) we arrive at an average monthly cost of around 150 euros. To this must be added the installment of the loan (for those who choose it), which obviously is variable. Reading the list you will surely have noticed that I have not mentioned the mandatory engine inspection coupons: Tesla, in fact, does not provide them as there is no need for them.
Just to make a comparison, the car I had before (Ford Focus 1.6L Diesel) had a maintenance cost of €330/month.

Bottom line, for me the car is as much an investment as buying a share or a handful of Satoshis. The only difference is that it has to get me from one point to another, but otherwise I treat it as an asset. I choose it based on its characteristics of maintaining value over the years and cost, trying to minimize the emotional impact. I evaluated Model Y along with 4/5 other vehicles but with Tesla there was no comparison. At the moment this company is several years ahead of the competition and anyone who drives one of their vehicles knows it well.
